Finke Desert Race champion Daymon Stokie dies in motocross accident

The 28-year-old reigning champion of the Finke Desert Race has died after coming off his bike during a motocross event in Alice Springs.

Alice Springs man Daymon Stokie suffered fatal injuries in the accident that happened during the Deep Well Enduro event on Saturday.

Paramedics treated the 28-year-old on the track, but he died at the scene.

In June, Stokie was the first Alice Springs rider in 11 years to win the motorcycle section of the Finke Desert Race, taking out the event with a broken hand.

The off-road, two-day race takes riders through desert terrain with a return length of 452 kilometres from Alice Springs to the small Aboriginal community of Finke.

More than 530 riders and about 140 drivers attempted the 2017 race, with many failing to finish the first day.

Stokie's family requested privacy, while police were investigating the incident.

Toby Price, fellow riders remember Stokie

Australian rider and former winner of the Dakar Rally and Finke Desert Race, Toby Price, paid tribute to Stokie on social media.

"It's sometimes the shittest sport in the world with news like this, but in one way you truly went out on top, winning everything here in Aust and overseas man," he wrote.

"Many thoughts are with family and friends and we will see you one day mate — start building some sweet tracks up there and we will shred again."

Fellow rider Kadin Guard remembered Stokie as a "great racer but an even better person".

"I'm grateful to have had the chance to know Daymon and watch him conquer some big races. Everyday in the shop, at the races or just at home, he was always a positive energy that we all loved having around," Guard wrote on Facebook.

"One of a kind and I know he'll be deeply missed by many but always remember[ed] for his big and energetic smile!"

Christina Vithoulkas said it was "the worst feeling ever to find out another mate lost his life".

"You went out doing what you loved and I hope you enjoy the tracks up there legend, Daymon Stokie fly high," she posted.

Riders and friends posted tributes from around the world, including California, Nevada, Vancouver and Ireland.
